Super Bowl Weekend: When Love and Loyalty Don’t Match

Super Bowl weekend hits a little differently when you’re a Seahawks fan from the Pacific Northwest…
and the man you love is a Patriots fan.

If you know, you know.

I grew up in the PNW, where Seahawks fandom isn’t casual. It’s inherited, emotional, and woven into the fabric of fall and winter. Sundays mean layers, yelling at the TV, and a collective understanding that football is not just football. It’s community.

Then there’s him.
A lifelong New England Patriots fan.

Which means this weekend?
This weekend is complicated.

A Little History (and a Little Trauma)

Let’s address the elephant in the room:
Super Bowl XLIX.

If you’re a Seattle Seahawks fan, that game lives rent-free in your head. You don’t even have to say what happened, your body just knows. Meanwhile, Deflatriots fans (sorry, it was a thing) remember it as one of the greatest moments in franchise history.

So yes, this matchup brings history.
And feelings.
And maybe a few jokes that land just a little too close to home.

Game Day Ground Rules

When your household is divided, compromises must be made:

  • Neutral snacks (no team-branded cupcakes… mostly because HE is the baker these days)
  • No gloating before halftime
  • Muted commentary during tense moments
  • Immediate timeout if emotions spike too high

We’re competitive, but we’re civilized. Mostly. Hopefully.

Why I Secretly Love This Rivalry

Here’s the thing, as much as I tease him, I kind of love the contrast.

This weekend isn’t just about football. It’s about:

  • Traditions colliding
  • Loyalty being tested
  • And realizing you can cheer for your team and respect someone else’s passion

It’s playful. It’s dramatic. It’s very us.

And honestly?
It makes the win that much sweeter… or the loss slightly more bearable when you’re not suffering alone.

May the Best Team Win (But Also… Go Hawks)

So here we are. Super Bowl weekend.
Green and blue on one side of the couch.
Red, white, and blue on the other.

There will be snacks. There will be yelling.
There may be friendly trash talk and selective memory loss afterward.

No matter what happens, one thing is guaranteed:
This house will be very loud. I hope the dogs are ready for the show.

And yes…
Go Hawks!
